Hazard and Risk
Everything in life is a hazard - unpredictable and irrational. A risk is the mathematical likelihood of that hazard happening. The media report any hazard as 'a risk' without any qualification as to the chance of that affecting their public. Bear in mind that there is great skill in putting the hazard when it occurs, into the true proportion of a risk and getting everyone to understand this. However, even the hazard with the smallest risk is completely unacceptable if the individual has no control over it. If you drive a car you are at a considerable risk to your life but you choose to drive and you are (supposedly) in control. If a food product is contaminated with a nasty bacterium ( the hazard ) , but only 1 in 2 million has it ( the risk ) , no-one wants to be the person who finds the one contaminated - so avoid it altogether.
